This small church of Saint John the Baptist is located in a region which called Kastri about 7 km east of Glossa and northern Skopelos. This lovely church stands on top of a rock and provides amazing view to the coasts of Skopelos and to Alonissos. Its name actually means Saint John the Baptist on the Castle (Kastri) assuming that probably there was a small castle there in the past to protect the island from pirates and generally from enemy’s invasions. The impressive rock is linked to the rest of the island through a narrow path with 110 steps carved into the stone. A small beach is formed right beneath the rock and it gets pretty crowded in summer.
Tradition said that there was a fisherman from Glossa who was returning from fishing one night, he saw a light at the top of the rock. He was seeing it every night until one night a appeared in his sleep and revealed to him that there was a icon at the top. So the next day he climbed to the top and found the icon of Saint John the Baptist. He took the icon but wherever he transported it to, the icon returned to its original position. So this is the reason why the chapel was established there.
The church celebrates on 29th August.
